Dean Alain-Philippe Durand is pleased to announce Dr. David Gramling will be the next Faculty Director of the Bachelor of General Studies program in the College of Humanities, effective Aug. 17, 2020.
Gramling is Associate Professor of German Studies, and an interdisciplinary humanities scholar-teacher, whose work ranges from health care communication to multilingualism, from German literature to Transgender & LGBT Studies.
The Bachelor of General Studies program offers students a broader, multidisciplinary course of study rather than a traditional major/minor. The flexible degree program prepares students to think critically and analytically across a wide range of disciplines or fields of study. Students can select from six different areas of emphasis: Arts, Media, and Entertainment; Economy and Industry; Global and Intercultural Understanding; Science, Technology, Health, and Society; Social Behavior and Human Understanding; and Sports and Society.
Gramling is a literary translator from Turkish, and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). He has keynoted conferences on language and literature in Italy, Canada, Belgium, the UK, and at peer institutions around the United States.
His forthcoming single-author books are The Invention of Multilingualism (Cambridge University Press) and Literature in Late Monolingualism (Stanford University Press). His 2016 monograph The Invention of Monolingualism received the Book Award of the American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) in 2018, an honor awarded to a monograph every other year. From 2012–2020, he served as Director of Graduate Studies for the UA Dual PhD / D. Phil. Program in Transcultural German Studies and, over the same period, he co-edited the journal Critical Multilingualism Studies, with Dr. Chantelle Warner.
Please join Dean Durand in congratulating David and welcoming him to the position of Bachelor of General Studies Faculty Director and in thanking Dr. Bobbi McKean for her years of service as BGS Faculty Director.
